Bundesliga season start 2022/23: Interview with Tony Jantschke

We, suresecure GmbH, co-sponsor and official cybersecurity partner of Borussia Mönchengladbach, are really looking forward to the new 2022/23 football season and the foals' exciting first home game against TSG Hoffenheim next Saturday! On this occasion, we grabbed Tony Jantschke and conducted a short interview with him. Tony is a Gladbach veteran - he has been with Borussia Mönchengladbach since 2006 and is entering his 15th season as a professional. Together we talked about the new coaching team, the past, the future - and of course IT security.

Tony Jantschke goes into the coming season with fighting spirit

suresecure GmbH: How did your preparation go this year? What challenges did you have to deal with?

TJ: The scope is very big. We have a new coaching team led by Daniel Farke, so there is a lot of new input, including for the head. As a result, we also have longer meetings, for example, because we have to internalise a new game idea. Added to this - as is always the case during preparation - is the heat. That's the biggest "adversity" you have to deal with during this time.

suresecure GmbH: Is it more strenuous than usual?

TJ: It's different. Preparation is always strenuous. Every coach has a different focus. Because all the data is recorded nowadays, it's not the case that one coach just does a bit of football tennis and another makes the players march properly. Some coaches focus on playing with the ball, others on running. Then some focus on comprehensive training sessions, others on short intensive sessions. It always varies.

suresecure GmbH: What does Daniel Farke do differently to other coaches?

TJ: It's always difficult to compare trainers with each other. Daniel Farke pays a lot of attention to detail and brings a breath of fresh air. We've been together for almost six weeks now and have released a lot of positive things, especially in the environment. Now we have to get it right on the pitch.

suresecure GmbH: "Offense wins games, defence wins championships" is a cliché. But you say: There's definitely something to it. Why?

TJ: Of course you need quality in offence, because you can't score goals without it. But we saw last season that you can't always score two or three goals. You have to manage to be compact and secure at the back in order to play to nil. Otherwise you won't be successful. If you look at our most successful seasons in recent years, especially at the beginning under Lucien Favre, we always did a really good job of defending.

"I'm delighted that Schalke and Bremen are back in the Bundesliga. They have great stadiums and great fans, just like us."

- Tony Jantschke

suresecure GmbH: Where do you see your strengths in the coming season? Also in defence?

TJ: We are a team that wants to play football. We're not a team that plays long balls and works for the second ball. We want to play out from the back and combine through. What is right or wrong in football is ultimately decided by the result, but I believe that this is one of our strengths. Our club is also stable. We had a difficult season last year at times, but we were still quite stable overall. I think that's a great quality of Borussia Mönchengladbach.

suresecure GmbH: Is there an opponent this season that you're particularly looking forward to?

TJ: I'm delighted that Schalke and Bremen are back in the Bundesliga. They have great stadiums and great fans, just like us. It's always nice when two traditional clubs play each other in a sold-out stadium. I can remember that we always had a packed stadium against Bremen in recent years and sometimes I couldn't even get tickets. I'm delighted that teams like that are back in the Bundesliga.

suresecure GmbH: As well as defending on the pitch, you're also very familiar with defending in IT, is that right?

TJ: Yes, I also trade in shares and have one or two stocks that deal with IT security. I think it's quite normal to buy an alarm system for your own home in order to be safe. In the online sector, you get the feeling that everyone tends to turn a blind eye to risks, even though it's just as important. It starts with passwords and goes on from there. I do believe that IT security will be an even more important building block in the future.

suresecure GmbH: Thank you Tony! And good luck for the new season!
