When cybercrime takes on unexpected proportions...

A massive increase in cyberattacks can be observed again at the moment. The reports in the press range from "System paralysed" to "Passport data of 12,000 Germans online" to "Death after hacker attack". The fact that an attack on IT has cost a human life should now sensitise EVERYONE to the issue of IT security.

Cybercrime is a mass phenomenon that is increasingly affecting not only private individuals, but also the economy.

This was said by former retired BKA Vice President Peter Henzler back in 2018 (source: dw.com). 2 Years later, the Global Threat Intelligence Report (GTIR) 2020 shows that almost 47% of all cyberattacks on German companies and organisations were reconnaissance activities to spy on and identify targets.

It has long been clear that the number of cyberattacks will increase and the attacks will become more and more sophisticated and professional. What's more, the coronavirus crisis has been exploited by many cyber criminals. The number of cyberattacks rose by 30% from February to March 2020 alone (source: computerwelt.at).

Successful digitalisation can therefore only go hand in hand with good protection of the IT infrastructure.

Why is it that despite the rapidly increasing number of cyberattacks, many people still haven't changed their minds?

Many companies are overwhelmed by the rapid development of today's types of attack and sometimes rely on security measures that are simply inadequate. Due to a lack of personnel and resources, there is neither budget nor time to develop the relevant skills.

In order to prevent, identify and defend against cyber attacks, employees are needed whose expertise is at least as extensive as that of the hackers themselves. Such specialists are rare and have their value.

The management level is responsible for expanding IT security in companies. The focus here should primarily be on preventing attacks and not just on settling claims - when it is actually already too late. The fight against cybercrime can only work with a well thought-out incident response strategy.
