Funding for digital projects in the healthcare sector

The following was decided in a meeting between the Federal Chancellor and the heads of government. The minutes state:

The federal government will invest three billion euros from the federal budget. euros from the federal budget in a "Hospitals of the Future Programme" to invest in more modern and better equipment for hospitals in Germany. The programme will focus on modern emergency capacities, a better digital infrastructure, IT and cyber security and strengthening regional care structures.

Due to the ongoing corona pandemic, the entire healthcare sector was at the centre of attention and more and more cybercriminal attacks on hospitals. For this reason, the funding programme only takes effect if at least 15% of the requested investment amount goes towards IT or cybersecurity. In addition, hospitals and clinics must prove that they have standardised digital standards and can transfer data to digital patient records. Dr. Gottfried Ludewig, Head of the Digital Department of the Federal Ministry of Health, says about the requirements:

So the money should not be spread across all hospitals. [...] No watering cans, no isolated solutions, measurable processes - that must be the focus.
