XDR stands for Extended Detection and Response and is a holistic security solution that links different security areas such as endpoints, networks, servers, cloud applications and emails in order to detect and respond to threats at an early stage. In contrast to traditional individual solutions, which often work in isolation, XDR collects and correlates security-relevant data from different sources. Through the use of artificial intelligence and automation, it identifies suspicious activities, reduces false alarms and facilitates threat analysis. The aim is to detect security incidents more quickly, minimise damage and make security processes more efficient. XDR is used by companies to better understand and proactively respond to attacks across different vectors.

How exactly does an XDR solution work?

XDR works by aggregating data from different IT security solutions, analysing it centrally and triggering automated responses to combat attacks in real time. A typical use case is the detection of targeted phishing attacks: While traditional email security solutions may miss a tampered message, XDR can identify suspicious activity on endpoints or the network and indicate that an attack is underway. XDR can also recognise suspicious data movements in the cloud and automatically initiate countermeasures.
